OUR STORY
We know plants can be hard to keep alive.
We nearly gave up and bought fake ones.
SmartyPlants exists because one couple weren't willing to give up on having real, thriving plants at home, and it turned out thousands of other people felt the same.
Read our story below
A PROBLEM CLOSE TO HOME
Every plant, killed with kindness.
Sophie dreamed of a home full of plants. The plants had other ideas.
She did everything right... or tried to. The problem was that "right" kept changing. One app blamed the light. Another swore everything was fine. She followed all the advice. The plant died anyway. Every time.
Eventually she stopped buying plants. She couldn't face killing another one.

THE REAL PROBLEM
It wasn't her. It was the guessing.
Ben watched the whole cycle from the next room: the hope when a new plant arrived, the guilt when it didn't make it. The quiet way Sophie stopped mentioning the ones that had died. He wasn't looking for a problem to solve, he was trying to stop his wife feeling like she was failing at something that was supposed to be simple.
He'd spent years working with data, and it hadn't occurred to him to point that at his own windowsill - until he noticed every app, care guide and blog post they'd tried had one thing in common.
They were all guessing
Generic advice for a plant they'd never met, in a home they'd never seen. So he built something that understood: a monitor for the plant, quietly translating what the plant was experiencing into something plain enough to act on. Not for a market. For Sophie.

THE FIRST TEST
The first plant that didn't die.
The first prototype went into the pot of Sophie's next attempt - a peace lily. Historically her fastest casualty.
It's still alive. So is everything she's planted since.
Not because Sophie changed. Because the guesswork stopped. For the first time, the plant could tell her what it actually needed - and it turned out she'd been perfectly capable all along. For the first time in years, she stopped checking the leaves every morning braced for bad news.

IT TURNS OUT, SHE WASN'T THE ONLY ONE.
38,000,000
houseplants die in the UK each year from improper care - more than one every second. Sophie's windowsill wasn't unlucky, it was completely normal.
BUILT WITH A COMMUNITY
1489 people knew the feeling.
"You look at what the problem is with your plants, and one website will tell you you're over-watering. Another website will tell you under-watering. Another website will say too dark, another one will say too light."

BUILT WITH A COMMUNITY
1489 people knew the feeling.
So when they opened pre-orders for 30 days - mostly to see if the monitor could help beyond their own windowsill - they weren't expecting much. What they got instead was 1.489 strangers ordering a device that didn't exist yet, because they recognised themselves in the same story.

WHERE THE STORY IS NOW
Thousands of homes. The same conversations.
Today, thousands of monitors are translating for plants in 49 countries, telling their owners exactly what they need. Solving the same problem Sophie faced.
And Sophie's house? Full of plants now. Real, thriving ones. She was never the problem - she just needed something to translate.
It turned out that the fake plants were never needed.
